It's use was first propagated in 1923 by Rene Caisse, who treated many cancer patients with Caisse Tea and it has gained a good reputation since.   In 1938 the Canadian Parliament voted on legislation to formally legalize the use of Essiac for the natural treatment of cancer in part due to a petition including 55,000 signatures. The influence of the drug companies prevented this legislation being enacted - but only just!
