Types of vitamin K

Vitamin K2 is much more bio-available than K1, almost 100% of K2 is absorbed and utilised throughout the body, via the bloodstream; as opposed to K1 which only has a 5-10% absorption rate. Vitamin K2 will also remain in the bloodstream for a few days whereas K1 will be expelled within a matter of hours.
There are very few food sources of K2 in the western diet. Most foods containing vitamin K contain predominantly vitamin K1 at about 80%. These foods include green leafy vegetables, olive oil, cheese, liver, soy beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, coffee and green tea.
The only food containing vitamin K2 at good levels is a traditional Japanese breakfast staple called Natto which is made from soy beans and has been eaten in Japan for centuries. Vitamin K2 and coronary health
According to studies, Vitamin K2 contributes to the suppression of atherosclerosis. Vitamin K2 has been linked to a reduction in coronary heart disease. A 2004 Dutch study, conducted on a large scale, found that vitamin K2 reduced the risk of death from coronary heart disease by an astounding 50%! It was further noted that calcification of the aorta was also reduced by 30-40%.
