Vitamin K2

Regenerative Nutrition have always been about broad spectrum supplementation, as far as possible, rather than many single supplements. The use of broad-spectrum supplements means we have to take less supplements. Natural synergistic reactions of multiple nutrients are important in high quality supplements and are effective in the long term. While vitamin K is assesed to be deficient in 99% of the planets population we do not directly offer a Vitamin K supplement, as we feel it is ideally manufactured in the body, or taken in a natural food state. We offer products that either assist the body to produce its own adequate levels of Vitamin K or to provide it in a food derived form. Primebiotic is a very good example of this as not only does it contain a broad array of nutrients and bacteria, once it is established in the gut it will go on to actually produce and synthesise many nutrients that the body needs, including Vitamin K2. Please read on for more information.

A brief summary of the benefits of vitamin K2
  • Boosts the circulatory system
  • Promotes a healthy heart
  • Enhances memory function
  • Helps build strong healthy bones
  • Helps fight premature aging
Scientists worldwide are now recognizing the extraordinary benefits of K2 to bones and heart health. This is one vital nutrient you do NOT want to be deficient in.

Vitamin K2 action

Whilst in the bloodstream vitamin K2 picks up calcium from the bloodstream and then relocates it to the skeletal system. Vitamin K2 has been clinically proven to provide major benefits for bone and cardiovascular health. Further it is a powerful anti-oxidant. Recent research points to evidence that it may also help with joints and intestinal health. As we age, calcium is deposited where it should not be, like in the arteries, tissues and kidneys. Magnesium Chloride, as contained in  Mag Sea Pure is another useful supplement for ensuring correct calcium deposition in the bones, and ensuring that more of the calcium we take in our food is absorbed and utilised.

Types of vitamin K

Vitamin K is actually a term that refers to several compounds. The broad divisions are vitamin K1 and vitamin K2, however these are further subdivided. The K2 group have been shown to be the more effective and complete of the compounds and most scientific research favours K2.

The body does not supply enough vitamin K to meet it's own needs

Whilst the body naturally produces vitamin K in the intestinal tract, in most cases it is not an efficient process and therefore must be supplemented from food. Reserves can not be built up either as the body is incapable of storing vitamin K for more than a few days. So it can be reliably stated that vitamin K must be provided by one's diet in most cases.

The deposition of calcium in soft tissues, including arterial walls, is quite common, especially in those suffering from atherosclerosis, suggesting that Vitamin K deficiency is more common than previously thought.

Our number one product for intestinal tract health, that will help enable your body to produce vitamin K more efficiently is Primebiotic, available in capsules and the more economic powder form. Primebiotic is available in our online store here. To find out more, please read the full article here.

Vitamin K2 is much more bio-available than K1, almost 100% of K2 is absorbed and utilised throughout the body, via the bloodstream; as opposed to K1 which only has a 5-10% absorption rate. Vitamin K2 will also remain in the bloodstream for a few days whereas K1 will be expelled within a matter of hours.

There are very few food sources of K2 in the western diet. Most foods containing vitamin K contain predominantly vitamin K1 at about 80%. These foods include green leafy vegetables, olive oil, cheese, liver, soy beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, coffee and green tea.

The only food containing vitamin K2 at good levels is a traditional Japanese breakfast staple called Natto which is made from soy beans and has been eaten in Japan for centuries. This food contains nattokinase, a powerful beneficial enzyme rich in vitamin K2. This past decade; studies have found that this food increases bone mineral density and reduce bone fractures. Nattokinase is found in our Multi Enzyme Protect (1000 FU* per 2 Capsules)

*Fibrin Unit (FU): a unit of potency for nattokinase, an enzyme that reduces the viscosity of blood and reduces its tendency to clot. The enzyme was discovered in natto, a traditional cheese-like Japanese food made from a fermented soybean mash. The unit is defined in terms of a specific test of a preparation's ability to dissolve fibrin, the protein found in clots; there is no standard equivalence to millograms.

The studies of Natto referred to above are backed up by additional studies of vitamin K2 which corroborate the evidence that it is very beneficial to the skeletal system and further notes that fractures in sufferers of osteoporosis are reduced.

Vitamin K2 and coronary health

According to studies, Vitamin K2 contributes to the suppression of atherosclerosis. Vitamin K2 has been linked to a reduction in coronary heart disease. A 2004 Dutch study, conducted on a large scale, found that vitamin K2 reduced the risk of death from coronary heart disease by an astounding 50%! It was further noted that calcification of the aorta was also reduced by 30-40%.

Vitamin K2 Safety

If you take anti-coagulant drugs (Coumadin, Heparin amongst others) you should consult a doctor before taking vitamin K2 as vitamin K2 promotes blood coagulation.

Vitamin K2 in pregnancy - Is it safe?

The answer is yes. In fact; pregnant women should ensure adequate vitamin K because there are several birth deformities associated with prenatal vitamin K deficiency which include shortened fingers, cupped ears, flat nasal bridges, and underdevelopment of the nose, mouth, and mid-face.

Vitamin K2 & Vitamin D3 in combination

Research has shown vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 may provide another level of benefits when taken together.

Several studies have shown the following potential synergistic benefits when vitamin K2 and D3 are combined:
  • Increased bone formation
  • Enhanced osteocalcin accumulation in cells
  • Amplified bone mineral density
So, vitamin K2 and D3 work together in certain situations to help improve bone health even more.

Because vitamin D3 encourages calcium uptake to promote strong and healthy bones, it's not only a natural complement to vitamin K2, the two nutrients work together to boost your bone health to a higher level.
