Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Reflux is referred to by many terms - Acid Reflux, Reflux Esophagitis, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

It is a very common condition, which most people experience at some time, however, in some, it can occur frequently and cause considerable discomfort including the common symptom – heartburn. (Occasional heartburn does not necessarily indicate Acid Feflux). The discomfort is caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus, this fluid may even be tasted in the mouth, and the esophagus can become inflamed and painful. Not all sufferers will experience heartburn, other symptoms can include hoarseness in the morning, trouble swallowing, tight throat, dry cough and bad breath.

It is common for drugs such as proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers to be prescribed to suppress the acid, but simply suppressing symptoms does not solve the problem, and indeed can cause further problems. Stomach acid plays a very important role in helping to digest food, inhibiting the body’s ability to do this, will in itself lead to further health problems.

Liquorice Capsules can help with acid reflux; one of the better known folk uses of liquorice in Europe has been in the treatment of gastric ulcers, and gastric distress and acidity are often quickly relieved. Ayurvedic medicine recommend Liquorice as an excellent remedy for hyperacidity, and clinical tests prove that it is good for relieving pain, discomfort and other symptoms caused by acid matter in the stomach. It removes the irritating effects of acids in a better way than alkalis. Please also see Digestive Disorders Tincture

Vitalyza 3 at just a few drops a day will help to alter the pH of the entire body to a more alkaline state. It quite remarkable that just 4 drops of Alka-Vita (Daily therapeutic dose 40 drops, maintenance dose 20 drops), will raise the pH of a glass of water to a highly alkaline pH, typically pH9.

Calcium tightens the lower esophageal sphincter (LES valve). This is not an antacid effect. In fact, the best type of calcium, because it is the most soluble, is calcium citrate, which is itself mildly acidic. The most effective preparation is calcium citrate powder. Take 250 mg, dissolved in water, after every meal and at bedtime (for a total daily dose of 1,000 mg). Swallowing calcium pills does not prevent reflux because the calcium is not instantly dissolved.

Dietary changes can also make a significant contribution to resolving acid reflux – please see our dietary guidelines here
