Experts now recommend supplemental Vitamin D, for those not exposed to regular sunlight, at a level of 4,000 to 8,000 IU a day for the best immune system protection and for helping to normalise calcium and other mineral absorption.

At 3 capsules daily Arthro-Care provides 3000 IU of Vitamin D. This is sufficient to help calcium metabolism. For the best protection, additional Vitamin D can be taken to raise the total intake to around 8000IU daily for an adult. Our Vitamin D3 product can be found here

Boron in the form of Sodium Tetraborate has been repeatedly demonstrated to yield a very high success rate in resolution of arthritis of all types. However if joints are fused then improvement will be much reduced. Taking sufficient magnesium over the course of many months may help to resolve calcium deposits and therefore offer more improvement in these cases. Information about our magnesium products can be found here

A companion product called Repair Tonic, also contains boron and other ingredients such as glucosamine to speed recovery from arthritis. Details can be found here

In very rare circumstances Vitamin D is contra-indicated in certain auto-immune conditions. If you have an auto-immune condition please ensure that Vitamin D is suitable for you. This hypersensitivity is usually confined to those with such conditions are Sarcoidosis, oat cell carcinoma of the lung and nonb

A double-blind hospital trial has shown that boron supplements are very effective in correcting Osteoporosis and Arthritis. There are no side effects. A low maintenance dose is sufficient to prevent osteoporosis even after the age of 80.

Rex E. Newnham PhD, DO, ND, was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, and received his initial medical and science training there and in Australia. A teacher of Chemistry, soil science, agricultural botany, biology and geology for over thirty years Dr. Newnham's investigations into nutrition began with a search for relief from his own arthritis, an affliction that became his primary field of inquiry. From this beginning, he went on to study homeopathy, naturopathy and osteopathy and earned a PhD in nutrition. He operated clinics in New Zealand, Australia and Britain and undertook nine trips around the world researching the epidemiology of arthritis and the general effects of nutrition on human health. He lived in Cracoe, near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, England, until his death in April 2008.

I spent most of the period of the 1980s doing epidemiological work and researching the areas of the world where there is more or less than the normal prevalence of arthritis of about 20%, and areas where there is more or less than the norm of boron in the soil or water.

The motivation for this work originated 35 years ago when I was living in Perth, Western Australia. Most of the soils around Perth are white sands which are very low in all essential minerals, but there are a few isolated areas with clay soils. At first I lived on one of these and all was well and we grew most of our own vegetables. Then we moved to an area where there was sandy soil. This had grown Banksia scrub and the sand was dark on the top and the first vegetable crop was fair, but the next year there was a terrible crop and every trace mineral was seen to be deficient in some plant or other. I had been trained in botany and had been teaching botany and soil science, so I could pick these deficiencies readily. At this time I developed arthritis and found walking difficult. The local GP gave me something which did not help, so I started to try to discover the cause of my own arthritis. With my training I naturally thought of soil minerals when these were all deficient in my diet. I looked at what the literature had to say about all of them - boron, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, potassium and zinc. None were relevant to arthritis, but boron was written off as not needed by man or animal, yet I knew that it was essential to the green plant and that it helped in calcium metabolism in the plant.

I found out all that I could about boron and most of the literature dealt with its toxicity. 40-60 grams was a dangerous dose and children had been killed with much smaller doses, but there was nothing helpful. So I took 30 mg of borax twice daily, this was 6 mg of elemental boron a day* and in a week the pain was less, in ten days the pain was less. In three weeks the pain, swelling and stiffness had all gone, so I stopped taking the borax. A year later the pain and swelling returned so I took more borax and in two weeks all was right again.

*Arthro-Care, at 3 capsules daily, provides the equivalent of 9mg of elemental boron

When boron is added to the diet, Arthritis is reversed

Dr. Newnham's findings were given at a conference of the British Society for Allergy, Environmental and Nutritional Medicine. Some of their doctors are now getting better than a 90% complete remission or correction of their cases of arthritis. Prior to using boron they were getting only a 40% good result.

NOTE: Not all boron compounds have these beneficial effects, so it is important to use those that have been properly tested.

Why It Works

Without Boron, the body has difficulty utilising other minerals which are essential for bone health, principally Calcium. Modern agricultural practices and plant strains have led to mineral-deficient soils and food varieties with lower mineral concentrations. Studies have been made of tribespeople who do not get arthritis when following a traditional diet of native cultivated plant varieties. Such people begin to suffer from the same degenerative arthritic conditions as those in the "developed" world when they move to towns and begin to consume the more widely cultivated varieties. It was found that the native varieties tend to accumulate much more boron than their often larger and more luscious-looking "modern" counterparts. Traditional methods of cultivation tend not to strip soils of essential minerals; commercially cultivated lands are often depleted after years of intensive farming.

Four steps to recovery
  1. Take an intensive course of boron supplements until the worst of your symptoms subside.
  2. Thereafter take the minimum boron supplement required to enable your body to properly absorb minerals and stave off degenerative conditions.
  3. You should now be able to derive adequate minerals and vitamins from your diet alone: to do this healthy eating is important. Where possible you should eat natural organically-produced foods, as these will contain more of the essential minerals your body requires.
  4. Moderate daily exercise according to your circumstances is always beneficial
