What is Type 2 Diabetes and what causes it?

Briefly; Type 2 diabetes is a malfunctioning state of the sugar (glucose) regulation and distribution in the body. It was extremely rare in the first part of the 20th century and is very clearly a result of modern food processing that deviates from the traditional food and agricultural systems.

There are a number of long term ‘insults’ to the body that produce Type 2 diabetes. The main insults being the change to processed fats and oils and the excesses of refined sugar and refined carbohydrates in the modern processed diet.

How to reverse diabetes through diet -  Summary of all the information you need (excluding some supplements) with video links Update May 2021

Update March 2021

A simple and effective way to overcome type 2 diabetes is explained by Dr Douglas Graham. Sometimes within a few days and certainly within a week or two blood sugar levels are normalised and medication to lower blood sugar is no longer needed. Diabetes sufferers, watch this short video and have your life changed for the better.

The basics are:  Diabetes type 2 is a situation where sugars from the diet derived from complex carbohydrates of vegetables, grains  or simple carbohydrates from fruit are not effectively delivered to the bodies cells, resulting in low energy as sugars are the main fuel of all the cells in the body. As a consequence of this excessive sugars remain trapped in the blood stream all day resulting in long term damage to the body that can lead to poor circulation, limb amputation , blindness , heart attack or stroke.

The problem is not: consuming foods that convert into sugars or as in the case of fruit contain sugars. Without sugar the body would quickly die, it burns sugar to live!  The problem is failure to deliver sugar to the cells. This is often referred to as insulin resistance. Dr Douglas Graham explains that (as revealed as far back as 1959) the main cause of this is excess fat in the blood stream. Stop consuming excess fat and within as little as 24 hours blood sugar will again be able to reach the cells, eliminating the essence and cause of diabetes and other related diseases.  Dr Douglas Graham covers the subject of what is the ideal fat consumption and discusses it in detail in his book 80/10/10 diet.

It is very simple, it is a diet of exclusively fruits and vegetables.  These will provide the ideal amount of fat, protein and carbohydrates needed on a calorie sufficient diet for you. (End of Update)

Improving Liver Function: An Essential First Step

Liver Cleansing Blend: Add 1 teaspoon of ginger powder to a cup of hot water and add 10 ml of whole organic lemon/lime juice and 10 ml of Cider Vinegar. A heaped teaspoon of Turmeric 'Golden Paste' or powder. Optionally; add a little honey (1 teaspoon) to taste. After the first week add a dessertspoon of Barely Grass Juice Powder to the blend.

In many cases blood sugar levels return to normal or near normal with 3 weeks use of this blend.

To make Turmeric 'Golden Paste' Note: Taking a Curcumin supplement is an alternative.

To 50g of powdered turmeric add 100 ml of warm water and stir to a paste in a saucepan while gently heating continuously for about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in 1 or more teaspoons of finely ground black pepper and/or Chilli Powder (this helps to drive the turmeric to where it is needed) and finally add 10 ml of coconut oil. Will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Organic Lemon or Lime: A complex mix of phytonutrients; a valuable aid for restoring liver function. Blending the whole lemon/lime with the skin on will provide the most potent juice of all.

Usage levels are as suggested below.

Over consumption can suddenly stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin that it was previously unable to, so driving the blood sugar too low, too fast.

Add to drinking water for regular consumption throughout the day which will help utilise the energy from food. This is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

Ginger: A recent study has proven ginger to have a positive effect on the health status of diabetics. It helps to provide an average level of blood glucose over a long period of time amongst many other benefits.

A therapeutic dose of ginger is one level teaspoon of ginger powder twice daily. Take in liquid, or once in liquid (see blend suggestion above) and once on food.

Turmeric: Curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) is 400 times more potent than Metformin (a common diabetes drug) in activating AMPK which improves insulin sensitivity so helping to reverse Type 2 Diabetes. Curcumin has also been proven to help reverse many of the issues related to insulin resistance and hyperglycemia and also displays impressive anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cider Vinegar: Medically proven to reduce blood sugar levels. It also Improves metabolism and aids weight Loss. Ideally, try to find organic apple cider vinegar with some cloudy mother vinegar at the bottom of the bottle.

Dietary Requirement Summary

Dietary Guide for Optimising Health & Helping to Overcome Chronic Disease including Diabetes

We are now recommending a high nutrient vegetarian diet  called "Nutritarian Diet” in its broad scope we recommend for all. It's easy to loose weight, overcome diabetes and other chronic diseases without deliberate restriction of calories.

Unlike the so called "Primal diets” of high protein and fat Nutitarian Diet supports longevity and optimum well being from the cradle to the grave.

The Atkins type or typical primal diets can work for a while to reduce weight and reduce diabetes, in the medium to long term create health problems and also are unsuitable for long term good results.

I found this information amazing as it overturns several popular myths about food. These include the fact that animal protein addition to the diet is not only NOT needed but is counterproductive to long term health. (With the possible exception that animal protein preferably small fish is eaten occasionally e.g once a week) A diet without animal protein contains sufficient protein for wonderful health and longevity. The elimination of animal protein from a whole food complex carbohydrate diet promotes health and longevity. Several scientific studies confirm that lower protein diets promote longevity. To promote longevity the body has to be more healthy.

The second major surprise for many readers is that complex carbohydrates, sometimes referred to as starches is the ideal way to resolve insulin and blood sugar problems, it’s only refined carbohydrates like white flour products including white bread that can create insulin resistance and blood sugar spikes, this is especially true when combined with a diet high in animal protein and fats that are present in all animal protein and low in vegetables and whole fruits.

Recommended reading are books by Joel Fuhrman M.D such as "Super Immunity  and The End of Diabetes.” and the 80/10/10 diet by Dr Douglas Graham.

Dr. John Mcdougalls Starch based diet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5wfMNNr3ak is useful to see as it rams home the point that a starch based diet is great for weight loss without deliberately limiting food quantity and also provides enough protein! We prefer for long term use Joel Fuhrman's approach as it makes sense and he has done lots of research over decades to come up with his diet. Also thousands of patients have recovered from various health issues, as has patients of Dr. John Mcdougall.

We do take issue with the fact that Joel Fuhrman seems to have absorbed the anti-salt lobby. Recommended reading is "The Salt Fix” by Dr James Dinicolantonio. He has studied in depth the effect of various levels of salt consumption on various populations and conclusively, as has other researchers, found salt is a beneficial addition to the diet even in surprisingly large amounts. Unrefined salt, especially high magnesium salt is especially beneficial https://www.regenerativenutrition.com/celtic-ocean-sea-salt-p-74.asp

We also take issue with Dr. Mcdougalls stance on the need to abstain from fats and the relation of fat consumption to health problems. Healthy fats from nuts and seeds are a valuable contribution to the diet.

Adherence to rigid menus often leads to non-compliance and disillusionment. So it is best to select your own menus and when to eat.

The most important suggestions to incorporate into your diet are:

Glycine and Diabetes

The severity of diabetes has been found to collate with the degree of body glycine deficiency. The reason is simple, glycine is quite possibly the major antidote to inflammation. It is inflammation that causes destruction of tissue and also damage to the beta cells of the pancreas. Supplementing with Glycine at 10 g or more daily, as discussed in the video below, can have the amazing effect of stopping the inflammatory process.

Glycine is contained in gelatin/gelatine (hydrolysed collagen from mammals or fish) at about 30%. However, taking gelatin alone will require a dose of at least 30g daily to achieve the best healing. This can work out costly and inconvenient. Since glycine alone is so effective and cost effective and very easy to take in drinks, it makes sense to either take just glycine at optimal doses of 10 g a day to balance the methionine that is contained in our average daily protein input or in some cases, depending on the individual responses, doses higher than 10 g daily. One can take gelatin in addition to provide more balanced nutrition (e.g. 10 g daily each of gelatine and glycine, or more glycine if needed, as stated above).

Note: 10 g glycine is approx 6 level 5 ml medicinal teaspoons

Remedy Suggestions

Chromium: Enhances the actions of insulin and is necessary for maintaining normal metabolism and storage of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. See here for further info.

Mistletoe powder: To help pancreas restoration, along with improving circulation. and lowering high blood pressure. See here for further info.

Unrefined Salts: Less than 6 g per day (average) results in increasing amounts of mortality from all causes, especially syndrome X and type 2 diabetes. Unrefined salt helps to normalise ones physiology, maintain a good pH balance and REDUCE high blood pressure. Ionic Liquid Minerals are recommended for therapeutic use whilst Celtic Ocean Sea Salt is recommended for use on food.

Blood sugar levels daily when treating Type 2 diabetes

If one is taking blood sugar lowering drugs, then as one begins to see improvements in the body's self regulation the blood sugar levels may drop too low due to the blood sugar lowering drugs, so careful adjustments need to be made with the dose of such drugs. Therefore do not suddenly stop these drugs, but carefully self monitor whilst changing over to a natural type 2 diabetes correction program. If one is using Statins (anti-cholesterol drugs) it is important to get off of these as soon as possible, however there are potential dangers involved in stopping this drug, so we strongly advise consultation with your prescribing physician and agreeing with them a safe plan of action.

Fucoidans: These combat metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease by modulating glucose and insulin levels. They enhance immune function, combat infectious diseases, and support defence against cancer.

A good source of fucoidan is a high quality seaweed such as Seagreens. See here for further info.

NADH: Supplies hydrogen (with electrons to donate) to get the whole Krebs cycle working. Helps repair damaged DNA. See here for further info.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (R-ALA) & Acetyl-L-Carnitine: helps to improve blood sugar as well as helping to repair damage to blood vessels caused by diabetes. See here for further info.

Vital Protect: Anti Oxidant: See here for further info.

Cinnamon: The inclusion of cinnamon in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. See here for further info.

Sodium Ascorbate with Acerola and Rosehip: See here for further info.

Ocean Repair: See here for further info

Glycine: This will quickly stop inflammation and help with growth hormone for good liver function. See Revive & Build (Glycine & Vitamin C Blend) here

Vitamin D3: See here for further info.

Serapeptase: simple oral chelation to help clear the blood vessels of accumulated deposits. See here for further info.

Beneficial Foods

Raw Cocoa Powder: Has potent antioxidant effects. Take care as it can be very stimulating. Start with small amounts preferably not late in the day until adapted to.

Apples: A sensible addition to the foods, herbs and nutrients used in overcoming diabetes.

Nuts: Increased energy after consuming 2 ounces of mixed nuts daily. Nuts are a good replacement for carbohydrate foods that can improve glycemic control.

Body Weight

It is often the case that excess weight and obesity go hand in hand with Type 2 Diabetes. Adherence to this programme will also result in weight loss and can be useful for those who are not affected by diabetes (yet!) to reduce their weight too. Weight loss is very difficult to maintain without adequate metabolic rate. Improving metabolic rate if it is low, usually leads to a reliable loss of excess weight. See here for details of how to assess and correct metabolic rate.

The Thyroid and Diabetes

Studies have shown that even when blood sugar levels are returned to normal, symptoms of fatigue and other symptoms associated with diabetes can in some cases remain. These symptoms can be relieved by taking a natural thyroid supplement (see further reading tab). It has been found that those suffering from diabetes have a higher incidence of low thyroid/low metabolism than the non-diabetic population. Sub-clinical low thyroid/metabolism is very common and can be ascertained simply at home with temperature testing as detailed in the article here. See further mention of this within the weekly plan outlined below.

Good Sleep

This is important in helping to normalise health including overcoming diabetes. Sufficient melatonin and growth hormone aid the regulation of blood sugars. Glycine and/or Ocean Repair (for a natural source of glycine) can aid growth hormone and help the liver to process glycogen and glucose. If your sleep is not as good as you would like, sometimes melatonin works well. Liquid melatonin is generally absorbed best. Only take a small amount (the lower end of suggested doses) and repeat the dose if need be when woken in the night, as its action can expire in a few hours.

Treatment progression

There are a considerable number of remedies and nutrients that are listed in this article. Do not attempt to incorporate them all into your regimen from the very start. It is best to add remedies incrementally over a period of weeks/months.

Some are more sensitive than others so may need to introduce new remedies more gradually than suggested whilst the reverse may be true for others. We therefore provide the following steps to the incremental introduction of remedies as a guide only. Be your own judge of how quickly you can proceed through the steps listed below.

The first 3 weeks (or more)

Take the Liver Cleansing Blend every morning for at least 3 weeks.

The liver needs bitter foods to encourage its continued healthy function and the addition of Barely Grass Juice Powder after the first week is an elegant way to do this.

The continued/permanent use of Barely Grass Juice Powder is a wise health insurance.

Add the remaining Lemon/Lime juice not used in the blend to daily drinking water and also remember to incorporate the rest of the daily Ginger powder not used in the blend.

Ionic Liquid Minerals are stabilising and can be introduced at the start of the program alongside the Liver Cleansing Blend (1 teaspoon a few times a day in food and drinks, up to 5 teaspoons daily). Nuts (large handful) can also be introduced from the start.

Vitamin D3 may be introduced in the 2nd week.

Week 4:

Cease Liver Cleansing Blend

Barely Grass Juice Powder (1 dessertspoon) and Ginger Powder (1 teaspoon) mixed with a little water.

Lemon/Lime (as per usage levels established above) daily in water.

Ocean Repair (2 heaped teaspoons) in a drink. Best taken in the evening as will aid sleep

Sodium Ascorbate with Acerola and Rosehip (1 heaped teaspoon daily).

Week 5:

Continue with all remedies established in week 4

Coconut oil (1 dessertspoon daily) - for ease of digestion, ideally take neat away from meals. Alternatively can be mixed with hot drinks.

Seagreens (2 or 3 capsules twice daily).

Week 6:

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-5

Coconut oil (increase to 2 dessertspoons daily)

Chromium GTF (1 capsule daily) best taken first thing in the morning before food.

Week 7:

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-6

Coconut oil (increase to 3 dessertspoons daily)

Week 8:

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-7

Cinnamon. This can be quite stimulating for some people at first , if you find that, it is best confine to the morning for the first week or two. See Cinnamon article here

Week 10:

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-9

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (R-ALA) & Acetyl-L-Carnitine. (1 capsule daily in the morning)

Week 11:

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-10

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (R-ALA) & Acetyl-L-Carnitine (increase to 2 capsules daily in the morning).

Maintenance (after 11 weeks):

Continue with all remedies established in weeks 4-11 for as long as you feel it is necessary. Some of the remedies (as indicated) are good to continue with to maintain good health.

Other Considerations

Time taken to reverse and the programme’s effectiveness

Blood sugar levels can normalise surprisingly quickly with the Liver cleanse; in as little as three weeks. However, it will take longer to repair cell membranes. This will depend on how severely they have been hardened and how long diabetes has been present. Also if the pancreas is weakened or damaged. In reality a lot depends on how well the diet is reformed and how well the therapeutic measures are applied. In short, reversal can be achieved in anything from from just a few months to a year in the worst cases.

But even in the worst cases blood sugar can be normalised quite quickly as indicated and this means the destruction of cells, circulation etc has been, by in large stopped.

Repair of damaged blood vessels and other tissues can take place provided sufficient anti-oxidants and good diet are maintained.

UPDATE August 2019 - DIABETES: A MAN MADE MASS TRAGEDY

There can be no doubt that diabetes and related diseases i.e cardiovascular disease and syndrome X, are not some rouge diseases mysteriously arising from imperfect bodies, but are a direct result of incorrect 'modern' foods that have pushed aside more naturally occurring foods and traditional diets.

Sufferers have 2 choices:
  1. Go to the conventional doctors for support, but no long term resolution of the disease.
  2. Take the 'bull by the horns' and correct the faulty functioning of the body with simple natural foods, herbs and nutrients.
The body’s job is to maintain homeostasis. Normally, blood glucose levels should be about 100 mg/dL. Whilst we eat, the pancreas secretes the hormone, insulin, to bring glucose levels out of the blood. Whilst the liver controls blood glucose levels when we are not eating by putting glucose back into the blood using a hormone called IGF. Diabetes arises when the body can no longer regulate blood glucose levels.

Type 1 Diabetes is the more chronic problem described by insufficient insulin, mostly due to pancreatic incompetence. Whereas Type 2 Diabetes develops over time, caused by the change from traditional diets, to modern diets filled with processed fats and oils, excess refined sugar and refined carbohydrates. Other major causes are excess food intake, especially combinations of high meat diets with refined carbohydrates. The habit of excess food intake is partly due to low nutrient density of the food i.e. junk food, processed food, fried food, snacking between meals, not giving sufficient fasting times between food to allow glucose and glycogen stores to be used. All of these factors, most often, are associated with excess weight - especially abdominal fat. If you have diabetes, or wish to lose excess weight, or wish to prevent diabetes occurring or developing further, then please see the information from Joel Fuhrman M.D. as discussed in the video below and described in detail in his book: The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes.

Food management to overcome diabetes is essentially the same as successful weight loss diets

Intermittent fasting is a very effective part of the diabetes and weight loss method. This is leaving as many hours possible between the last meal of the day and the first meal of the next day. Ideally 16 to 18 hours. The time gap can be increased slowly to reach these targets. E.G a 16 hour intermittent fast each day could be achieved by having the last food at 6 pm and breakfast at 10 am. Intermittent fasting helps to re-set insulin management. Diet should include mainly vegetables including daily greens, whole food carbohydrates such as some root vegetables, legumes (lentils, beans ,seeds, nuts), some fruit but not too much and very little meat or other animal proteins. This is the basis of the diet that has achieved long term success and is discussed in detail in the book.

PARHATSATHID NABADALUNG (AKA TED EARTH CLINIC) - CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

I have found three substances that get blood sugar down, namely:

    Nacetyl Cystiene
Beta carotene (mostly found in carrots)
    Bitter cucumber.

The N acetyl cysteine has a long-term effect (which takes about a week) to get blood sugar down, but the quickest is freshly squeezed carrot juice alone or with bitter cucumber. That gets blood sugar down fairly quickly, always less than 110.

Research circles surmise that diabetes is due to a deficiency in beta-carotene and cryptoxanthin (the yellow pigments in carrot, pumpkins and orange rinds). Beta-carotene is a provitamin of Vitamin A. From my own observation I have found provitamins, or percursors of vitamins, to be far more effective than the vitamins themselves in a few cases, such as panthenol, which is a vitamin B5 of pantothenic acid or beta-carotene for example. These get blood sugar down very quickly and also have a stabilizing effect on blood pressure (in some cases there is no need to take blood pressure medicine if carrot juice is consumed).
