Both internal and external factors can cause eczema. The severity of the condition can range from a few dry, red, itchy patches to huge areas of the body which can be covered in sore, inflamed, weeping and bleeding skin which can invariably become infected.   Eczema is a complex condition and there is usually no one single cause.  External factors such as house dust mites, pets, climate, and even clothing can influence eczema and factors within the body such as stress and diet can have a huge impact.

Atopic Eczema is thought to be hereditary, the most itchy form of dermatitis.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis usually develops over a long period of time as a result of regular contact with a substance such as perfume or make up.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis is due to contact with irritants to the skin, household detergents and chemicals are the main culprits.

This type of eczema is associated with yeast growth.

Varicose Eczema more common in women, tends to develop in later life due to poor circulation, affects the lower legs and ankles.
