Bell's Palsy

 

This condition is linked to the facial nerve where the face becomes paralysed on one side. In most cases, the paralysis is temporary and will pass within a few weeks.  Ina a small number of cases, symptoms can remain for longer periods of time or indefinitely. In rare cases, both sides of the face may be affected. Bell's Palsy can affect any age group but is more common in those over the age of 40.  The condition can develop over a period of hours or days.

 

Symptoms typically include mild pain and numbness in the affected side, inability to close the eye, difficulty in smiling and wrinkling the forehead, slurred speech, tears in the eyes due to difficulty in closing the eye, and sometimes the sense of taste can be diminished.

 

In many cases, no specific cause can be estalbished, but it is thought that a viral infection of the facial nerve may be involved and in some cases, there may be a connection with the Herpes Simplex Virus.  Following an anti-viral protocol can often be effective, so our reccomendations would be as follows:
